A superb early drawing on brown paper. Dr. Günther Gercken, who is presently preparing a catalogue raisonné of the prints of Kirchner, has examined the original and confirms the attribution and date.
Provenance: Dr. Gervais, with his notation at the bottom left reverse of the sheet “KLM 12”. Gervais, from the 1930s on, was one of the most discerning and assiduous collectors of Kirchners prints, drawings and watercolors. His collection was dispersed in portions in 1947.

Signed and dated in pencil lower right Beckmann 18, titled left Kreuzabnahme and inscribed (Handdruck erster Zustand). On chamois laid paper with watermark ORIGINAL HAND LINEN P & H, with full margins.
A brilliant, fine impression of the first state, with platetone. Extremely rare, Hofmaier records only further 2 impressions. In 1919, the second state of the print was published as Plate 11 in the portfolio Gesichter. Unlike the even and punchy impressions of the published state, executed by professional printers, this proof, pulled by the artist himself, shows a much greater variety of accents and differenciation and allows us to follow Beckmann's sensations and creative process.

One of a very few handcolored impressions before the completion of the stone. According to Sohn (Felixmuller) of the planned edition of 30 only about 10 were printed. With extensive rework in colored chalks around neck and shoulders indicating the alteration in the stone of the final state (Sohn 210 B). A superb proof, the colors extraordinarily fresh, on smooth, yellowish wove paper. One of the artist's major prints, exceedingly rare.

Kasbek is the name of one of Georgias highest mountain peaks. Here, in the Berlin of the 1920s, it featured as the name of a night-club run and frequented by Russian émigrés.
